4K resolution, baby!

Today, Sony has officially announced the Xperia Z5 family of phones, headlined by the Z5 Premium. The Z5 Premium is Sony’s answer to the flagship devices of its competitors, and boy, is it a bold statement. For one thing, the Z5 Premium is the world’s first phone to offer a 4K resolution display – that’s 3,840 x 2,160 on a 5.5-inch panel. For the pixel counters out there, that’s 806 ppi. While people will debate if that resolution is overkill for a phone with such a small display, you can’t deny that’s an amazing feat by itself, something that no other manufacturer has managed to accomplish.

Sony’s sensors are everywhere, and it only makes sense for the company to put in their best camera in their own flagship. The Z5 Premium sports their 23-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS sensor. The camera sports a six-element 24mm lens with a f/2.0 aperture, along with phase detection. Sony’s new Z5 series are also almost stock Android, as Sony has decided to do away with their UI on the Z5 series of devices. The phone also sports a fingerprint scanner on the side.

Much like the Z5 Premium, the two other members of the Z5 family – the Z5 and the Z5 Compact are also present during IFA. In terms of hardware, all three are identical, save for physical size, battery and RAM – the Z5 Premium has a 5.5-inch 4K panel, the Z5 has a 5.2-inch full HD display while the Z5 Compact has a 4.7-inch HD display. The Z5 Premium has a 3,430mAh battery, while the Z5 has a 2,900mAh battery and the Z5 Compact has a 2,700mAh battery, and only 2GB of RAM.

Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact will launch globally from October 2015, and Xperia Z5 Premium from November 2015 – Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium will be available in both Single SIM and Dual SIM variants.

  1. Words to Sony: Wow. That Xperia Z5 Premium can fry eggs in just a few minutes. I wonder if I can boil water with this thing?

  2. Firedragon 810 w/ 4k display at 3430 mah non-removable battery in 5.5-inch phone!? This is like apocalypse waiting to happen.

  3. Jeeezus, 4k plus the 810? Goodluck on the battery and performance. At 2k the 810 was already strugling and a toaster already. And now at 4k? You can probably cook some eggs on that. Lol. Srsly, do we really need 4k on a phone? On a tablet no probs but a phone? I don’t think we need all of that extra pixels. It will just eat the battey like white on rice. They should have ATLEAST waited for the 820. Sony should just have focused on fixing post processing their camera rather than boosting the reso.

    1. As warm as the OnePlus Two. Good job. Never as hot as my MT6582 Android One that heats up to even 60°C and above. Yes, I can cook something with my phone. In your face, DingDing!

Okay, seriously, I’ll hope if Sony can cool this heating mess down…

  4. pag ang mga flagship phone na lumalabas eh mababa ang reso, sasabihin nio puro negative, tapos may flagship na lumabas mataas ang reso, everyone commenting about heating issues faster than horn* rabbit and gayweather runnin hahaha negative pa rin. mga pinoy talaga oh,, alam ni sony ang ginagawa nila, sa lahat ng phone na nilabas walang issues like apple and samsung..

  5. Daming complain sa snapdragon 810 v2 at 4k display. Kailangang umusad ang technology para maging mura ang older tech. Hintay muna kayo ng full reviews bago magreklamo. Kung di rin naman bibili shut up na lang.

    1. Hahaha tama puro reklamo lang alam gawin research muna kasi para d mag mukang tanga panoorin nyo sa btek ung heating issue nya wlang problema kahit mag record ng 4k in 10min. Ung ibang reklamo dito copy-paste lang eh.

    2. WOW, just WOW. Would you look at that beauty, SONY keeps on releasing such phones like this. I died while reading the specs, panigurado tagilid samsung at apple diyan, kahit saang bikyaran 😀

  6. haha. andami niyo reklamo sa overheating at battery drains fast,. FYI, still 2days battery Life 344mah
tsaka di na sya nagooverheat unlike z3+, binaklas nila at may nakitang double Pipe para hindi siya bastbasta uminit,. sony lang ang nagsucceed while others hindi sa SD810 na iyan
