It's big... it's powerful... it's scary thin... it's the Sony Xperia Z Ultra!

The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Lands at the Unbox HQ

Happy to let everyone know that the very good folks over at Kimstore sent us a loaner review unit of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra! The massive 6.4-inch phablet arrived at our HQ earlier this afternoon and it definitely got a lot of “oohs” and “aahs” in the office as we took it out of the box and showed it around. At 6.4-inches this device seriously moving into the tablet space already (that happens to have telephony functions) than a smartphone with a big display, hehe. Anyway, we’ll know more about it as the days go by but for now allow us to share with you guys our unboxing and initial experience with it.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Spec Sheet

  • 2.2GHz Quad-core CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 Processor
  • Adreno 330 GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB Internal Storage, expandable via microSD Card
  • 6.4-inch Full HD TRILUMINOS™ Display for mobile powered by X-Reality™
  • 8.0-megapixel rear-facing camera with Exmor RS for Mobile, HDR
  • Front-facing camera (not sure yet what the MP is)
  • WiFi, WiFi Hotspot, 3G, HSPA+, Bluetooth, NFC, GPS/aGPS
  • 3,000mAh Battery
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • Waterproof and dust-resistant (IP55/IP58) durable design

Definitely impressive specifications. Noticeably missing though with this model is LTE.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra Unboxing Video

For the unboxing we prepared a short 5-minute video which also has some of our initial impressions. Check it out below!

Hardware First Impressions: This thing is MASSIVE

HUGE.
HUGE.

Let’s get the obvious out of the way. The Sony Xperia Z Ultra is HUGE. Like what we said earlier, at 6.4-inches it’s really more of a tablet already than a smartphone. Using this device with one hand is totally out of the question. You’ll need both thumbs to text on this unless you’re a basketball player with really long fingers, hehe.

Here’s a photo of the Ultra side-by-side the 5.0-inch Galaxy S4 Active and the 5.5-inch K900.

Now the good news though is that Sony was able to maintain their “omnibalance” design philosophy with the Ultra. Despite the huge display it’s just 6.5mm thick making it the thinnest phablet we’ve ever seen. It also feels very premium as it has glass both at the front and at the back (yes it’s a fingerprint and smudge magnet, hehe).

We were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the display when we turned it on. At 1920×1080 resolution, we get full HD quality here. Watching videos and movies will definitely be an awesome mobile experience if you have the Ultra with you while you’re on the go. We’re thinking this is one of the best devices you can have when you’re on a long haul flight.

It’s FAST too!

Unlike the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 which packed a dual-core processor, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra runs on a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor. This thing is a screamer. Even with the heavy bloatware and the Sony Timescape UI, we barely felt any lag or delays in the transitions. The apps also loaded fast and we were able to multi-task smoothly. Hopefully this will continue as the days go by and we start breaking in the device with more graphics and memory intensives applications.
