Viral Fridays: Man Who Went Nuts at Apple Store Sentenced, Fined $19,000

Welcome to Unbox’s “Viral Fridays” where we feature weirder than usual tech and geek related news to cap out the week.

Late last September, a viral video went online showing an angry French man going on a device-smashing spree at an Apple Store in Dijon, France. The man, naturally, was arrested by the mall’s security. His reason for the rampage? Apple wouldn’t replace his defective iPhone. Maybe it was a case of the “Touch Disease”?

Fast forward a month after. A few days ago, a Dijon court sentenced the man to a six-month suspended prison sentence, along with a fine of $19,000 for damages caused to the Apple Store.

Additionally, the raging Apple fanboy faces two years of probation and was ordered to pay an additional fine of $327 for his actions toward a security guard.

According to a local news outlet’s report, there was a disagreement over the total amount the suspect should be fined for. Apple’s counsel appraised the damage at around $65,000, but the court ordered the Apple rager to repay only around $19,000.

Unfortunately, the Apple Store staff messed up the crime scene by quickly replacing the destroyed devices, leaving the police unable to fully assess the cost of damage. The court also argued that the display items were technically not for sale.
