Vivo To Make Apex Concept Phone, Will Begin Production Later This Year

Vivo’s all-screen concept becomes a production phone

Chinese brand Vivo initially announced their Apex smartphone as a concept device during its debut last month during MWC. But now it looks like the company has figured out how to mass produce their all-screen device for manufacture later this year.

The phone bucks the current trend of utilizing an iPhone X-type notch at the top of the display by using hidden front-facing ambient and proximity sensors as well as Screen SoundCasting tech to emit sound from the display. The phone also utilizes a pop-up selfie camera.

According to reports, the phone will begin production in the middle of the year, with the production device sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor on the inside.

Before machines start churning out the Apex though, Vivo will have to work with smartphone rival Essential, who currently owns the patent for the pop-up camera. If Vivo goes ahead and starts production without the patent, they’re in for an ugly legal fight with Essential and Android’s dad, Andy Rubin.
