Vivo Y71 Unboxing, Quick Review: A New and Gorgeous Sub-10K Star

We unbox the Vivo Y71!

Following the launch of the V9 last month, Vivo updates its 2018 portfolio with the Y71. A sub-10k offering, the Y71 aims to bring the trendy 18:9 display while keeping its price low. While it does look like the V7+, it is interesting that Vivo managed to make an affordable version of their mid-range phone last year. Here’s a quick recap of the specs:

  • 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor
  • 2GB/3GB RAM
  • Adreno 308 GPU
  • 5.99-inch HD+ display; 1440 x 720 resolution
  • 16GB of expandable storage (up to 256GB)

Packaging and contents

Just like the V9+’s box, the Y71 comes in a white box containing a colored photo of the phone in front, along with Vivo’s logo and the Russia 2018 World Cup seal. The Y71 comes in two variants: a 2GB version and a 3GB version. For this unboxing, we got the 3GB version.

At the back of the box, you have a quick overview of the Y71’s highlights. These include a 5.99-inch HD+ display, 3GB RAM (for this variant), 13-megapixel rear camera, and Vivo’s Face Access.

Inside the box, you have your usual accessories: A MicroUSB cable, a wall charger, a headset, a SIM ejector pin, and some documentation. While there’s no free case, Vivo pre-applied a screen protector with the Y71 to protect the screen from scratches.

Initial impressions: The V7+ reincarnated

Without talking about the internals, it is easy to mistake the Y71 for a V7+ as they have practically the same design. Yes, the Y71 has the same 5.99-inch HD+ display of the V7+, with the main difference being the front camera: Instead of the V7+’s 24-megapixel camera, you get a basic 5-megapixel camera instead. Since you have the same display, you also get 2.5D glass for the Y71’s gorgeous near-bezel less display.

The same goes with the rear, as the Y71 uses the V7+’s polycarbonate matte back that can be a smudge magnet at times. Notable differences include the absence of a fingerprint scanner and the use of a 13-megapixel snapper instead of the V7+’s 16-megapixel module.

While the Y71 uses a downgraded rear camera, the camera bump is very noticeable. We recommend getting a case for the Y71 to protect the camera bump from any form of damages. If you have a hard time getting a case for the Y71, you can use a case for the V7+, as both phones have the same dimensions.

Let’s go through the usual run-through of ports: At the bottom, you have a headphone jack, a microphone, a Micro-USB connector, and a single speaker.

On the right side, you have your power and volume control buttons. Just like the V7+, you have antenna lines running at both ends of the phone.

You have a full-sized SIM card tray on the left, which holds two NanoSIMs and a Micro SD card slot.

Under the hood, you have a Snapdragon 425 quad-core processor, which is a staple for phones at this price range. You can choose between a 2GB or 3GB variant, though we recommend getting the 3GB variant since the price difference is not that big. The internal storage is at 16GB, which may be small for some. No worries though, as you can put up to a 256GB MicroSD card in the Y71 if you really need extra storage space.

For the OS, you get the latest version of Android Oreo paired with FunTouchOS 5.0 Our initial use was pretty smooth, but we reserve our judgment until we thoroughly use the phone in the coming days.

That’s it for our unboxing and quick review of the Y71. Make sure to head back to the site in a few days for our full review. In case you missed it, the Y71  is priced at Php 7,990 for the 2GB variant and  Php 8,990 for the 3GB variant.
