Xiaomi’s Next Phone Will Have a 48-Megapixel Camera

The megapixel race ain’t over yet

2019 is up for an interesting start. While Samsung and Huawei are racing to release the first phone(s) with a punch hole display, Xiaomi is gearing up for a different competition: the Chinese brand is up for the megapixel race with a prototype device teased by Xiaomi co-founder and President Lin Bin.

In the teaser photo shared by Bin, a 48MP camera text is very visible, right behind an LED flash and a rather huge camera bump housing the said module.

As for what sensor Xiaomi will be using, Sony’s IMX586 is a potential candidate. Launched last July, the IMX586 is a 48-megapixel sensor with 0.8um pixels on a 1/2-type sensor. It has pixel binning features that let it shoot low light photos at 12-megapixels, along with support for 4K at 90FPS, Full HD at 240FPS, and HD at 480 FPS (with cropping).

Last May, Xiaomi created its own in-house camera division in efforts to improve the photography capabilities of its phones.
