Epic Games Announces Unreal 5 Engine

The demo footage used PlayStation 5 hardware

As games become more advanced thanks to better hardware, Epic Games unveiled their latest 3D game engine with Unreal Engine 5. Two key new features of Unreal Engine 5 are Nanite and Lumen.

Nanite is described as an update to the geometry pipeline, where developers can now import their ZBrush sculpts, photogrammetry scans such as Quixel Megascans or CAD data straight into the engine. Nanite aims to stream and scale geometry in real-time for a more realistic, life-like appearance even at close-up shots.

Lumen, on the other hand, is a dynamic lighting system that utilizes multi-bounce illumination. The tech aims to be a more affordable solution to ray-tracing for simulating bounce light.

To showcase these new technologies, Epic Games released a 9-minute in-game footage demo that uses hardware from the upcoming Sony Playstation 5.

Unreal Engine 5 will be available for preview by early 2021 and will be available later on for iOS, MacOS, Windows, Android, and next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 5 and XBox Series X.
