This should lessen the hit of your breakup

It’s almost a requirement nowadays that you be friends on Facebook with your significant other (that’s where the phrase Facebook Official comes from) but what happens when you break up? The akward photo tags, your ex showing up in your newsfeed in conversations she has with common friends – even on the internet, things can get very, very awkward.

Thankfully Facebook is testing out a new feature that hides your exes from your feed after you break up. The new tool pop up automatically when you change your relationship status, which limits how much you see your ex on Facebook, how much they see you on Facebook and people’s ability to see past posts when you were still together.

“This work is part of our ongoing effort to develop resources for people who may be going through difficult moments in their lives,” Facebook product manager Kelly Winters wrote in a blog post. “We hope these tools will help people end relationships on Facebook with greater ease, comfort and sense of control.”

The new tool to help you cope with a breakup on Facebook is rolling out first in the US, and will be tweaked according to user feedback before being rolled out to a wider audience.

Unfortunately, Facebook can’t stop you from stalking your ex – you’ll have to do that on your own.
