Google Announces Android 9 Pie (Go edition)

Even budget phones get a new version of Android Pie

Along with the full version of Android 9 Pie, Google has also announced a Go Edition of Pie. Like Andriod 8.1 Oreo Go Edition, Android 9 Pie Go Edition is a stripped-down version of the operating system that’s meant for budget devices with limited resources.

There are a few small improvements to the overall experience compared to last year’s version, including further space savings since Android 9 Pie Go Edition consumes 500MB less. That may not seem a lot for most phones nowadays, but for affordable phones that typically work with just 8GB out of the box, that’s quite a bit of savings.

The new Android Go version also provides faster boot times and top-of-the-line security features like verified boot, as well as an accessible dashboard for tracking and monitoring data consumption.

Data-saving versions of Google’s core apps are included as well, including Google Go, YouTube Go, Maps Go, Files Go, Assistant Go and Android Messages.

Google is yet to announce the exact release date for the software, but it’s slated to arrive this fall.
