Google Limits Video Storage for Google Photos

“Unsupported video” formats will consume space

Heads up to those who depend on Google Photos for backing up their precious photos and videos: while Google Photos offers unlimited storage for photos, given that you are fine with the service compressing the quality of your photos, it has recently limited the video formats you can store in your Google Photos account.

In a support article, only MP4, MOD, and MMV video files will be part of the free storage offering of Google Photos. Other formats like MOV and MKV will be unsupported and will count against your storage quota starting December 7.

While this new development may sound as bad news, it should not affect most users, as the majority of cameras and smartphones record video in MP4.
