Google to End Free Uploads on June 1, 2021

If you have been using Google Photos to back up your images, Google announced that it is ending its free uploads of high-quality images effective June 1, 2021. We received this notification on our email, confirming that Google is informing all of its users about the change.

In its advisory, Google explains that all photos uploaded in High Quality after June 1, 2021 will count towards the free 15GB storage that comes with your Google account or with any additional storage purchased through Google One. Existing content uploaded prior to this date will not count towards your Google Account storage.

However, if you are using a Pixel phone, you still enjoy free, unlimited backup for your photos and videos for the said period.

In addition, Google plans to launch a tool come June 2021, where it will let you manage your backed up photos and videos and let you choose whether to keep them or not. Presumably, Google will use AI tricks as the said tool will automatically highlight dark or blurry photos or large videos.
