Microsoft Announces More Details On Windows 10

This is what you can look forward to on the new operating system

Microsoft took wraps off on the successor to both Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1, Windows 10. It’s clear that the company is looking to unify the desktop, notebook, tablet and phone experience into one seamless experience that’s the same for all platforms. It’s a tall order – certainly something that the company wants to deliver to all of its current crop of customers – Microsoft has earlier announced that Windows 10 will be free to Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 users, as well as Windows 7 users if they upgrade to the platform within the first year of roll-out.

Microsoft has also decided to fully integrate Cortana, that Siri-like assistant that’s present in their current crop of Lumia devices on Windows 10, including the desktop version. Microsoft’s demo of Cortana’s abilities during their press conference was impressive, with Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President, Operating Systems Group at Microsoft able to carry a conversation with the virtual assistant, even giving her prediction of the eventual winner of this year’s Superbowl. Unlike Siri and Google Now, Cortana’s voice isn’t robotic in Windows 10, and she’s able to communicate naturally.

Since Microsoft is unifying the experience, notifications are now synced across devices, and Windows 10 is smart enough to know that you don’t want to see that pesky alert that you dismissed on your phone on your PC. Microsoft’s also working on universal apps that will work with your PC as well, which includes Outlook, as well as smarter sync of data across all your devices, including your photos.

Windows 10 1

With Windows 10, Microsoft is also releasing a new, more powerful web browser to the world. Code named Project Spartan, the new browser will have a new rendering engine, as well giving users the ability of annotating webpages and sharing them to other people via Microsoft’s OneDrive without a stylus – all you need is your mouse, or your finger (if you’re using a touch-capable device like a phone, tablet or a PC with a touch display). The new browser also has a reading mode, which acts exactly what it sounds like – it takes away all the clutter of a particular website and optimizes it for reading. Finally, Cortana will also make her appearance on the new browser, by the way of giving you helpful advice on topics she can search on the web, like finding the directions to a restaurant you want to eat at, showing you what time it closes (or opens) as well as the relevant contact information.

Windows 10 XBOX

Finally, Microsoft is also integrating XBOX services into the entire Windows 10 OS. It’s now possible to stream your Xbox One game to any PC or tablet, and you’re also able to view, comment and share clips of PC games to your friends, as well as anyone with an Xbox One. There’s also plans for cross-play between Xbox One games and Windows 10 powered PCs and tablets on the same WiFi, but how exactly that’ll work out, we’re not exactly sure.

On to release dates. No official release date for the new OS has been shared, though the next Technical Preview for Windows 10 on the PC will be made available to Windows Insiders next week, and for phones this coming February.
