Following Google’s initiative to offer select original shows from local content companies in YouTube for free through Super Stream, Netflix is reportedly going to do the same as well. According to OnlyTech, Netflix’s development team confirmed that they are letting non-users watch select original TV shows and movies for free through desktop and Android browsers. For the TV series, Netflix will be letting non-users watch the first episode in hopes of transforming these non-users into Netflix subscribers.
Here’s the initial list of shows that can be watched for free—do note that like with Super Stream, Netflix will change the available content from time to time.
- Stranger Things
- Boss Baby – Back in Business
- When They See Us
- Love is Blind
- Our Planet
- Grace and Frankie
- Murder Mystery
- Bird Box
- The Two Popes
Aside from the caveats mentioned above, do note that you can only view these select content for free at standard definition—Netflix is reserving HD, Ultra HD, and HDR resolution if you subscribe to one of their plans.
Netflix’s efforts to offer some of its content for free is one of the many ways it tries to win in the growing streaming wars. Prior to Netflix and YouTube efforts, Apple offers its Apple TV+ service free for one year for those purchasing any iOS or Mac products and offered select original shows for free—without any subscription—last April.
With the whole world being in a state of uncertainty due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, streaming services are finding various ways to let people enjoy their original content for free—and hope that their offering is compelling enough for these people to apply for a subscription.
