You’re no longer limited to square photos

Starting today, Instagram is now allowing its users to post photos and videos in both landscape and portrait orientations on the company’s platforms.

“Square format has been and always will be part of who we are. That said, the visual story you’re trying to tell should always come first, and we want to make it simple and fun for you to share moments just the way you want to,” says the company on their official blog earlier today.

The new change is a welcome move from Instagram as users who wanted to post either landscape or portrait photos needed to add white bars to the end of their content, which lowers the resolution of image. Instagram made the change after it noticed that 1 in 5 photos uploaded on their service is not in the square format. Incidentally, the change also allows companies and advertisers to push their content to millions of Instagram users in a more natural way. Instagram is pushing an update for its app on both iOS and Android, and should be available for download today.
