Our 5 Favorite Easter Eggs from the New Ready Player One Trailer

Our 5 Favorite Easter Eggs from the New Ready Player One Trailer

Loaded with Easter Eggs!

Two years ago, I was on the hunt for a new book to read and a friend recommended a title called “Ready Player One” by Ernest Cline; saying that it would appeal to the gamer in me and he was right! I spent the next couple of days with my head buried in a book and even downloaded the audiobook, narrated by Wil Wheaton, for the times I would be spending stuck in the car. Needless to say, it was a really good read/listen and you can imagine how psyched I was when they announced that they were turning it into a movie.

The new trailer just dropped a couple of hours ago and it was chockfull of great easter eggs. Here’s a list of our favorite ones.

The Delorean from Back to the Future

There are many iconic rides that have hit the silver screen, but you cannot deny the recall of Doc Brown’s Time-travelling Delorean from the Back to the Future franchise!

The Iron Giant

The Iron Giant was an animated movie that was released back in 1999 with the huge robot itself voiced by Vin Diesel; though he didn’t really say much, did he? In the movie, the Iron Giant was an autonomous weapon of mass destruction that befriended a little kid when its circuits got frazzled.

Gundam

While we’re on the subject of bad ass robots! Japanese Anime/Manga represent! Blink and you might miss it in the trailer but the OG Gundam — the RX-78-2 makes an appearance!

Tracer

Ready Player One was released back in 2011; way before Overwatch gave us sleepless nights. It’s good to see that the guys behind the film updated its cast of characters to include memorable members from recent game titles as well. Let’s hope that they don’t take too many liberties in the story though.

It’s also pretty hard to miss Chun-Li beside here. Keep an eye out for other Street Fighter characters too!

The Joker

This probably my top pick on this quick list. Not because of the character specifically, but the person they chose to honor with this little easter egg. Yes, the Joker and Harley Quinn show up, but it’s Heath Ledger’s Joker that made it into the movie, which is probably my favorite Joker that made it on film (Mark Hamil’s voice acting aside, of course).

There are a ton of Easter Eggs to search for, some obvious and some that you’ll completely miss if you either didn’t have those characters as a part of your childhood or just because you blinked at the wrong moment. If you really want to hunt for Easter Eggs just as our protagonist in the movie will do, we suggest slowing down the trailer to a crawl to be able to see all of the things you could possibly miss while playing it at full speed.
