Rock of Ages Stage Play

Rock of Ages Stage Play

Rock of Ages Stage Play!

Suddenly it’s cool to wear your old Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard shirts again. Well, if you’re going to see Rock of Ages, that is. If you haven’t heard, Rock of Ages is rocking Manila in two ways: one) the movie release with the all-star ensemble of Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and the gang and 2) the Philippine staging of the original Broadway sensation starring Australian-Filipino INXS Finalist and reprising his role as Stacee Jaxx from the original US Tour of Rock of Ages, Mig Ayesa.

But with the movie already out in cinemas why watch the live show?

The answer is because the two are very different. A musical turned into a movie will have great departure from the original source material to make it “work” on the big screen. In essence what happened in the movie is a different retelling with various characters dropped and replaced and various songs, themes and scenario’s changed. So, it’s nice to revisit what it all was before the changes. And that’s where the magic of stage comes in—it’s all about the experience!

In an interview with Rappler, Mig Ayesa points out that if you want to experience the actors, the emotions and the songs in its purest most raw form, you go see the play. It’s akin to watching a concert rather than listening to a CD. It’s harder to bop your head, sing aloud and have a rockin’ good time with a CD than with a live band performing. So in essence that’s what the play gives: that venue where you can experience all of these.

Another good thing about live stage plays is that it becomes interactive. The energy that the audience gives also affects the performers. So in a way you’re part of that artistic process. Now if this is all philosophical mumbo-jumbo to you then here’s what I can assure you, watching the play is a great way to party with your friends to the most rocking tunes of the 80’s!

What’s not to like? And yes, singing along is allowed.

Also we’ll encourage you not to come in a strict suit and tie and cocktail dress outfit. It’s not that kind of show. Go in with your faded jeans, those Van Halen shirts and black eyeliners. You’re welcomed here. This is home.

Atlantis Production, the outfit behind Rock of Ages Manila is bringing forth a powerhouse cast of uber talented performers. Some ranging from veterans (Jinky Llamanzares, Jamie Wilson) to theater regulars (Nyoy Volante, Aiza Seguerra, and Jett Pangan) to fresh blooded newcomers like Bibo Reyes (who did an exceptionally wonderful performance in Ateneo BlueRep’s Bare: The Musical) and Ms. Vina Morales.

With hit songs after hit songs like “Don’t stop believing”, “Cum on feel the noise”, “We built this City on Rock and Roll”, “More than words” and so much more we’re looking at nothing but a good time!
