It’s a cheaper alternative to the PS Vita

While the star of the show today was undoubtedly the PlayStation 4, another member of Sony’s console gaming family also came out to play during today’s festivities. The PlayStation Vita TV was there in the flesh, so we took a couple of minutes to check out the tiny console.

And when we say tiny, we do mean tiny. It’s slightly smaller than the previous generation of Sony’s Dual-Shock controller, which means it can literally fit almost anywhere near your TV and not be noticed. Heck, you can even attach double sided tape to it and attach it on the back of your TV so you’ll banish it from your sight for good – it’s that small.

The PS Vita TV is basically a PS Vita without the touchscreen and the integrated controller. Instead, it connects to your TV via an HDMI cable, controlling your games wirelessly through a Dual-Shock controller. It’s a full fledged media machine, able to connect to the internet via Sony’s PlayStation Network, though how that would play out here in the Philippines is unclear, as there is currently no official support for PSN. You plug in Vita games via the SD card slot on the device and before you get any ideas, Sony uses a proprietary SD card called the PS Vita Card, which houses the games themselves. According to the Sony reps present, each game comes in a single PS Vita Card which retails for roughly Php 3,000 each. If you own a PS Vita and have a library of games already, then you’re in luck – Sony says that a lot of the games for the PS Vita will work for the PS Vita TV except for the ones that explicitly require the touchscreen and the microphone to work.

Graphics on the PS Vita TV isn’t bad, and is roughly comparable to the graphics found in the PS2. There’s definitely a lot of pixelation going on, which is expected from a game console this size. It seems that the bigger the TV, the worse the pixelation and rough edges get, so if you’re going to get this particular console, you might want to pair it with a TV set that’s 32-inches below.

that’s it for now, we’ll try to get a review unit from Sony so we can give you guys the entire story on the PS Vita TV. Folks who want to get it now need to fork up Php 8,599, which inclusive of a Dual-Shock controller.
