YouTube to Stream Videos in 480P by Default

They want to reduce strain on internet bandwidth as well

Netflix is not the only streaming platform that is downgrading its stream quality: YouTube will reportedly reduce streaming quality globally as well, defaulting to standard definition (480P) quality, according to a report by Bloomberg.

Like Netflix, YouTube is doing this to reduce strain to internet bandwidth as more people are staying at home and resorting to streaming because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We continue to work closely with governments and network operators around the globe to do our part to minimize stress on the system during this unprecedented situation,” Google, which owns YouTube, said in a statement.

Users will not be limited to 480P, however: despite the proposed change, you can go for higher streaming quality by manually selecting the option.
