  1. Hi,

Recently both this model the A/T variant ( a month old), nice exterior and interior. But now i call this little car as a gas guzzler, currently its has an average of 8-10km per liter (Beats my 2.0 2003 galant). Already sent this back to KIA – CAC for FET(Fuel Efficiency Test) and been told it has passed – average 18km per liter(hmmm not true and i can prove it) . To all KIA picanto 2011 who has this complain please send email to ray_salas1974@yahoo.com.ph.

Last comment: Wont recommend this (even though i have a picanto 2010 which has a better mileage) go for another brand until they fix this issue.

  2. hi! i also bought a brand new kia picanto 2011 last june at kia pasong tamo branch.. and i’m really disappointed with the fuel consumption @ 8-9 km/l.. sobrang malakas talaga sa gas for a 1.0 engine! i’m told to wait for a call from them for the schedule for fuel efficiency test.. hope mafix na ang problema

    i won’t also reccomend this

    1. To ALL picanto buyers, report to DTI now, 751-3330, I filed a complaint already because I’m getting 7km/l only (city with eco) for a 1.0L engine!!! Lets get the promised 19km/l city and 26km/l highway or lets all get our money back!!! FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!!! VERY BAD!!!

      1. Guys – kpg bago car tlga mlkas p yan sa gasoline. Wait lang kayo ma-break in pra gumanda FC. Kung si Celerio nga 34km/L ang advertisement pro ang totoo kalahati lng nmn ang naabot nya. Isip isip lng.. BTW hndi ako tga KIA

  3. I just bought a cherry red Kia Picanto 2011 model here in Bacolod… i noticed the fuel consumption was not as i expected… sobra kumain nang gas… is thier a way to check or fix this?

  4. we demand a Fuel Efficiency Test… i have a Kia Picanto 2011 model.. i have thew same problems….

  5. I have mine too, Same problem the odometer tell 8-9 and sometimes 17-19 but mostly 8-9 and i can feel malakas kumain ng gass. Ill will send this to the casa for fuel efficiency test.

  6. The best part about the new Picanto is the new commercial. ..lol..jokes apart, the small car is awesome but the nail polish commercial is indeed so indulging.

    1. am encouraging that we file a class suit cc DTI, guys. already submitted my formal complaint but no formal reply received. that is how they treated their customers.

  7. mine have already undergone fuel efficiency test and after proving that it cant reached what they have been promoting at 18-22km / liter, now their saying that the standard fuel efficiency is only 10km/liter.

    1. 10km/l if you drive on eco mode which is super slow poke, I’m now just getting 7km/l on casual driving!!! CALL DTI NOW, 751-3330, I’M GETTING MY MONEY BACK IF NOT THE MILEAGE THEY PROMISED!!!

  8. same problem with my new picanto. just bought it 3 weeks ago. binalik ko sa casa after a week complaining the high fuel consumption which averages only 8km per liter or 11+ liters per 100km. e sabi ng service ng Kia Manila Bay wala naman daw problem yung sasakyan. they even told me na matipid na daw yung ganung consumption compared sa i10 at celerio.

ano ba puwede natin gawin sa ganitong problem?

    1. The normal average consumption of a 3 cylinder engine (or 1.0-liter in displacement) is 8 to 11 kilometers per liter. Actually, there’s no problem with your car consumption. But there’s a lot of factor to consider.

One is: Power-to-weight ratio; and the other one is our driving style.

The power-to-weight is measurement of actual performance of any engine and its weight. The common problem with smaller displacement engine is that they are zippy, but in reality underpower or needs a lot of force exertion (acceleration) in complimenting your speed. The more weight (or excess) you have in your vehicle, the more power (acceleration) you needed. In result, you’ll burn a lot of fuels in your car.

I guess my answer to your question is driving style. At this point of time, there’s a lot of fuel-saver gadgets, fuels that claims to be efficient, and other oil performance enhancer out there. But the only tips i can recommend is to go back on how you behave on the road. This not mean–that you would behave literally; but you should be aware of your driving style—like too much revving, braking too hard, idling, always on low gears, tires pressure, etc.

The fuel consumption of every car will always depend on the driving style of every driver.

      1. Kris,

thanks for your comment. I really appreciate your thoughts on this matter. But may I ask of any background that you have in engines? Im just wondering kasi di ba mas lesser dapat ang consumption ng 3 cylinder engines but you stated that such engines normally consumes 8 liter per kilometer?

I always make it a point not to step the gas pedal if my current speed still provides me with my desired acceleration. Lagi din ako nagshishift sa mataas na gear kagad.

May Toyota Corolla kasi ako na 1.6 before buying this Picanto. Sa observation ko, pareho lang sila ng consumption. Kala ko makakatipid ako sa 1.0 and 3 cylinder na engine. Ganun din pala.

    2. Ginia Domingo, CAC president said the all-new Kia Picanto caters to the needs of a new generation of car buyers.

“First-time car buyers are after fuel efficiency, horsepower and environment friendliness,” Domingo said. “The Picanto is very fuel efficient, is one of the best in its class in horsepower and reliability, and has low carbon dioxide emissions as well. It also has very good headroom and legroom.”

Domingo also believes the Picanto is targeted at buyers who are more conscious about a car that gives more value for money spent.

You may also check this site for the DOE test on Picanto:
      http://www.tsikot.com/kia-picanto-fuel-efficient-in-doe-test/

      According the DOE test:

The Picanto registered a respectable fuel efficiency rating of 20.8 kilometers on a liter of gas despite the adverse climatic and poor road conditions during the actual run. The DOE test occurred at the height of Typoon Caloy where trees felled by the tropical cyclone’s howling winds littered the streets. The test driver had to slow down and weave through various road obstructions every now and then, conditions not really conductive to such kinds of test.

“The Picanto could have done better,” says Apollo ‘Bong’ Rosal, Columbian Autocar Corporation’s national service manager. “Conditions were very bad at that time that the Picanto test driver had to literally zigzag his way to skirt fallen trees and other road obstructions. In more hospitable conditions, I have no doubt the Picanto would have rated higher and be even more fuel efficient” he adds.

The nail art TV ad of Kia also brags that Picanto runs at 4.1 liters per 100 kms. or 24.39 kms/liter.

      http://yourfingernails.wordpress.com/2011/08/18/nail-art-animation-the-kia-picanto-2011-tv-ad/

I bought my Kia Picanto based on the above plus the assurance of Kia dealer that Picanto really consumes only around 20 kms/liter city driving.

However, just on the first week of use, I found out that it runs only at 12 – 13 kms/liter on highway driving and 7 – 8 kms/liter on city driving so I brought it to Kia Alabang for check up.

My car was fuel tested yesterday. The Kia personnel drove the car with me on the passenger seat.

Per the fuel test requirement, we tested first at the speed of 60 – 80 kms/hour. The result was 19 kms/liter. We got the same result on the second test at the speed of 100 – 120 kms/hour. However, when we tested the car on city driving, it registered only at 4.78 kms/liter.

We can ask Kia to return our money or change our unit with a new one since their promise of fuel efficiency is way below the actual consumption.

This is false advertising and some kind of a breach of contract.

    3. REPORT IT TO DTI NOW, 751-3330, I already did!!! dapat mag recall sila and fix the problem or give our money back, CLEARLY FALSE ADVERTISEMENT!!!

      1. Hi GT,

We are already doing some actions to expose this false claim/fraud of Kia. We have already informed our dealer, Kia Alabang, that we will return our unit and we are demanding for a full refund of the money we paid.

The general sales manager of Kia Alabang said the 7 – 8 kms/liter consumption of our car is normal. He also that I am the only one complainig.

We all have do our part and file a complaint to Kia and copy DTI, DOE and other concerned agencies to prove to Kia that there are many complainants and that we will not let them get away with this FRAUD.

We could also use the social networking sites like facebook, twitter, multiply, etc. to inform our relatives and friend about this false claim/fraud of Kia.

We could file a class suit against Kia if they refuse to give us a full refund of the money we paid.

DTI. DOE and our lawyer said that we have a very strong case against Kia.s

I would appreciate it very much if you guys coulld contact me through my email jun_theproducer@yahoo.com

  9. aws, so disappointed… m planning to buy pa naman… maganda talaga porma pero kung mamumulubi ka naman sa gas, wag na lng… salamat sa mga comments… now m back to my old plan of buying mazda 2 hatchback…

  10. Morning everyone! I’m one of the first owner of the new Kia picanto (matic) in Mindanao. Bought the unit last June of 2011, I was so disappointed with the consumption of this new 1.0 engine. Every time I make a full tank, the digital meter will give me an average reading of 5 to 6 km/Ltr. The car is with the Kia dealer on our area for about 3 months now, and I’m not planning to have it back until they will come with a solution. To Kia company… Sorento, sportage, 2005 picanto are very good performing vehicles. Dont destroy the name KIA because of these new picanto units. Hope u can fixed the problem.. Jojo of Mindanao

  11. Hi,

First and foremost would like to thank everyone who posted feedback on this site, and it’s good to hear that i’m not alone.

After a month of my first post i did my own research and test. What i’ve done so far to prove my point in this so called Fuel efficient car. (Mind you the test done are the same parameters, SLEX from Magallanes to Cabuyao for Highway and within makati area for city driving).

a.) Done my very own Fuel efficiency test using a digital black box attached to the computer box ( I used turboguage you can look it up http://walyou.com/turbo-gauge-car-gadget ). When we (with a help of my certified Subaru Chief Mechanic) reviewed the black box it registered an average of 9 to 11km/liter on highway driving and city driving from 6 to 7.5km/liter.

    b) Next another round of Fuel efficiency test conducted by CAC (Kia Sole Distributor in the Philippines) with me riding along. They have their own gadget and it says 19 to 21 km/liter
on highway driving and 14 to 16km/liter on city (WOW !!!).

    c) Asked around and investigated on the so called gadget they used. To my surprise the gadget they attached is neither certified nor sanctioned by DOST. Also they don’t have yet the proper test results conducted by DOST as they are still scheduling it.

I’ve done so much that CAC just says that their car is fuel efficient and they see no problems with my unit then turns their back. It costed me a lot not only financially but also time and effort.

To Kris Lim. I Agree on what you said about driving style but i cant explain why is my 1.6 KIA Soul 2011 (Which is under powered as opposed to the original engine of 2.0 and also a AT variant) consumes less gas than this very little car.

    Anyway

Sadly to say Me and my wife already had talked about this and decided to our regret to return the unit. As this car is financed so i have no choice but this coming Monday November 21, 2011 we will be going to EAST WEST Bank in Pasong Tamo to surrender it, We know that this will be damaging our reputation on the stated bank,But it’s hard for us to pay a monthly due without even or daring to use the unit on a daily basis (My picanto 2011 just sits on the garage).

Lesson learned: Review carefully before purchase.Don’t be fooled by advertising and good looks, test drive and compare.

  12. Hi Guys,

As I mentioned in my previous comment, we can demand a full refund or replacement of our unit since KIA did not meet their promise of fuel efficiency.

We have consulted this to our lawyer friend and to DTI. They said that we definitely have a strong case against KIA.

You can contact me through my email jun_theproducer@yahoo.com

  13. Oh man!… good thing i checked these reviews first. Thank you guys for sharing these facts.. me and my wife decided to own one on financing, currently they’re offering a low down of 38k for the 4 speed auto variant. i really felt bad that we fell in love with this small car because of its looks inside and out plus i think the previous models have good reviews, and then learn of these cons.. well, time for other options. Thanks again!

  14. Hi, I have my 2007 kia picanto and my average fuel consumption is 8-9km/l city driving but on express way it ranges from 10-12km/l. it is not a fuel eco car and worst is when parts worn out its very dificult to look for parts specialy if you bring it to servitek and rapide, except if you bring it to kia service center but they charge doubled as compare to orther casa. Recently I complaint about brake stuck up, they replace the brake master-cylinder immediately but after picking it up and paid the PREMIUM price for repair the problem is still there, so i’m pissed that i have to go back to them and worst pay for something that is not the real cause of the problem.

    1. I have a 2007 picanto.. Same din sa akin nasira ang brake master pero hindi ko sa casa pina replace kc sobrang mahal talaga sa casa..had bad experience sa casa before, nasira lng bushing ng mga suspension niya binigyan agad ako na 50k lahat babayarin ko so i decidedto pull it out at pinaayos ko sa goodyear dun d umabot 5k nagasto ko. And yes medyo mahirap parts ng kia.. I would not recommend kia here to anyone..mag toyota nlng kayu mas tipid pa gas niya marami din parts

  15. Hi Guys,

My car was tested again for fuel efficiency last November 28 and it registered at 7 kms/liter on city driving. A little better than the 4.78 kms/liter result last November 5.

The Kia technical person admitted to me that based on their tests, the 2011 Picanto can only run at an average of 10 kms/liter. He said that it is impossible to achieve 20 kms/liter on city driving as claimed by the dealers/agents and 4.1 liters per 100 kilometers as mentioned in the Kia Picanto 2011 TV commercial. http://yourfingernails.wordpress.com/2011/08/18/nail-art-animation-the-kia-picanto-2011-tv-ad/

This is very far from the claim of Ginia Domingo (CAC President) that the 2011 Kia Picanto is VERY FUEL EFFICIENT and gives more value for money spent.

Check this site for more details:

We should not let Kia get away with this fraud/false advertising.

We should expose this by sending emails/letters to the concerned agencies like DTI, Dept of Energy (DOE), Automotive Association of the Philippines, etc.

We can also use the social networking sites like facebook, twitter, multiply to inform our relatives and friends about this fraud.

We should do this until KIA admits this fraud and give us a full refund of the money we paid.

  17. Good evening. I sympathize with all of you sharing the same problem that plagued me since 2006. When we purchased our picanto, we thought it would really be fuel efficient.but since it served as a back up car from 2006-2010, we tolerated its gas guzzling feature.
From 2011 to the present, we started using this car regularly and clocked a consumption of 6.2-6.5km/ltr….parang expedition ang paghigop Ng gas.

I thought of bringing the car to the motor doctor.due to schedule issues, this was delayed.then I came across HURRICANE FILTERS.tried it.so far, I’m happy with the P2500 I spent for is filter

This is just raw data, I have yet to observe the fuel consumption for another 2-3months but my initial observation is I computed fuel consumption to be 7.8-8km/ltr

    For your information

    Thanks

  18. The new Picanto’s fuel consumption at 9-10km/L is really unacceptable when you consider that this car is already fuel injected. For comparison, my 1993 daihatsu charade which also has a 3 cylinder 1.0 displacement engine has a the same fuel consumption at 9-10km/L. Thus, considering that my charade is close to 20 yrs old and has a carburetor but has the same fuel efficiency as the 2012 Picanto, the new Picanto’s fuel consumption is appalling. I was really tempted on getting this car but I have read horror stories about its fuel consumption. I’m not getting this car anymore.

  19. Good day All,

I’ve been contemplating on buying a new car to replace my ’97 Honda City 1.3 until I came across this Picanto model. It is actuallly mesmerizing and it captured my attention. Then I started watching reviews from YouTube but mostly European car reviews.

Below are the links you can watch which actually resulted in great reviews.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSVtO4U7pYw
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBfKur4aI94

These almost made me decide to own one as I already inquired for financing terms and requirements… until I read a blog from Bigoatee (which is also posted in one of the replies above…) and most especially this blog which finally made me decide NOT TO OWN this model.

I am no car expert let alone an engine specialist but the Euro version is very different from what we have here. In the Philippines, everything is stripped off to lower the pricing and in the process compromises the quality and performace which explains why we have lemons in our backyard.

Thanks to all who chipped in their views and experiences and I bid you all the best of luck that you may succeed in winning your case against this obvious and evident FRAUD. I will be frequenting this blog to reade more updates and I pledge my support to your goal.

    Regards.

  20. I just also owned picanto 1.0 MT variant. here in cebu
It’s a month old. My FC really sucks.
My first full tank only reaches 8km/ltr. that’s city driving with ac.
2nd fulltank, only 10-11km/ltr city drive and south part of Cebu drive, highway with ac.
3rd fulltank, also 10-11km/ltr mostly south part of Cebu drive, highway with ac.
4th fullltank, only 10km/ltr city drive w/o ac.
    My current mileage is 1400km+
already has his first change oil and filter change a week ago.
I already told the maintenance and they look at it in their computers and told me that nothings wrong.

Hopefully KIA will recall or fix the problem on the FC of this unit. I really love this car but the FC is un-acceptable. Here’s my email lapucherai@gmail.com, if you need to contact me.

    Thanks,
    Paul
