Would you go on a motorcycle ride if need be?

Motorcycles for hire isn’t a new concept in the PH. More popularly known as habal-habal, these unregulated two-wheeled conveyances are popular in remote provincial locations and in the busy corner of EDSA near the Ayala MRT station. Ride sharing app GrabTaxi knows the popularity of motorcycles for hire, so they’ve started testing GrabBike, a new service that uses motorcycles to transport paying customers.

Right now GrabTaxi says that the new service is limited to BGC and Makati for now. Unfortunately, they failed to mention a lot of other details, like what kind of liability the motorcycle operator and GrabTaxi have if the rider and passenger get into an unfortunate scrap, what level of protection is provided to passengers (not all helmets are made equal), what kind of displacement is required to get into the service, and so on. Motorcycles are quite different beasts compared to cars, and getting into an accident while riding one is usually bad news.

But the appeal of riding one to get from point a to point b is definitely enticing – especially in our perpetually gridlocked roads.
