COLOUD The Boom Review: Here Comes the Boom

COLOUD The Boom Review: Here Comes the Boom

Nokia’s partnership with Coloud hits all the right notes

We’ve reviewed a couple of Coloud products already here at Unbox and what’s another on-ear to start the year right, right? The good guys at Nokia were kind enough to lend this official Nokia accessory.

Nokia understands that great phones become waaay better with the right accessories and their partnership with Coloud is another step in the right direction. When the very first Nokia Lumia smartphone was released, Nokia entered into a partnership with Monster to create ridiculously amazing earphones and headsets. While Monster has a distinct sound profile with its more pronounced bass, it also costs a considerably more (like 10x more) than this new line of accessories. Taking cost into consideration, the Nokia Coloud series are actually decent for their price.

Considering that it’s pretty hard to find official Nokia accessories locally, the more widely distributed and accessible Coloud brand is a welcome sight indeed. With prices ranging from Php 1,850.00 to Php 1,499.00 (at Lazada.ph) these cans offer colorful, well-balanced sound for your media player.

The Coloud Boom Nokia Edition comes in the typical snazzy blister packaging that we have come to expect from all the other Coloud products.

So, what’s the main difference between the Nokia Edition and the non-Nokia Edition? Well, except for the Lumia Red and Yellow colors and the subtle Nokia branding on the control grip (Mic & Remote), this is pretty much the Coloud Boom as is.

Of course, that’s not an entirely bad thing either. Sound-wise, the Boom offers decent Bass and an overall clean tone. While not particularly spectacular, for less than 2 grand, the sound quality is leaps and bounds above cans of the same price range. Instrument separation isn’t as distinct as I would have loved it to be and you may benefit from tinkering with your media player’s equalizer (the Nokia Lumia comes with its own audio equalizer as well) but all-in-all, the Boom comes off with crisp, clear and somewhat full-bodied sound.

The only difficulty I had with this headset is the fit. While the elastic metal band ensures that the Boom stays in place, it does leave a bit of discomfort around the ear with prolonged usage. I could never use it for more than 3 hours straight without straining my ears. (Author’s note: This discomfort varies from person to person. I had my brother use it and he seems fine with it. So I suggest you try them on first before you purchase them.)

Overall though, the Coloud Boom Nokia Edition is a welcome buy particularly if you’re looking for something to match your Red or Yellow Nokia Lumia’s without having to burn a hole in your wallet. 🙂
