Google to Partner with MediaTek for Android One

The affordable chip maker is rumored to be the partner of Google in their new initiative

We’ve talked about Android One, the new initiative of Google that’s aimed at streamlining and simplifying Android smartphone production for the next 5 billion users before. To achieve Google’s extremely ambitious goals, the search giant is allegedly going to partner with Taiwanese chip maker and the SoC of choice for many low-budget smartphones, MediaTek, according to DigiTimes.

Google and MediaTek have supposedly partnered up to achieve Google’s goal, which means that MediaTek will get the latest software and firmware of Android so that the chipmaker will be able to develop compatible chipsets. Remember, any smartphone that’s under the Android One initiative get preferential treatment to timely OS updates much like how the Nexus line gets new Android OS updates ahead of everyone else. Furthermore, sources say that the Micromax produced, sub-$100 smartphone that was shown during the the Keynote of Google I/O apparently had a MediaTek processor.

Who knows, we may soon see a smartphone offered by a local brand that is guaranteed to get the latest Android updates. One can dream.
