Will we finally see Android 4.4 on locally branded smartphones?

While Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has certainly made it easier (and cheaper) for people to own fantastically spec’d Android phones without dropping insane amounts of cash, their less than stellar performance in providing timely Android updates leaves a lot to be desired. If you’re the sort of person that’s always lambasting phones offered by local brands because of the distinct lack of KitKat updates (you know who you are), you’ll be happy to know that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. According to a report, MediaTek is working on the KitKat update for a number of their chipsets, which include the popular MT6589, MT6582 and MT6592, and is expected to finish by the end of April. Of course that doesn’t mean that you’ll be getting a KitKat update once April 30 rolls around, as local players will have to propagate the update themselves to their smartphones, so you may need to wait a few more days (or weeks if you’re really unlucky) after the promised date. That beats not getting the update at all, right?
