MSI GE62 VR Camo Squad Unboxing, Quick Review: Weapon Of Choice?

Does the new notebook offer something more than a fancy skin?

MSI is a formidable name when it comes to PC gaming. Aside from producing gaming components the company also builds and sells value-for-money gaming notebooks, competing with domestic rivals ASUS and now Acer (with their Predator gaming line) for precious customers. Today we’ll be unboxing their limited edition MSI GE62 VR Camou Squad bundle, which sees their GE62 VR swathed in a distinct digital camo skin to make it stand out from the pack.

MSI GE62VR 7RF Camo Squad specs:

  • NVIDIA GTX 1060, 6GB of VRAM

Packaging and contents

The notebook we’re unboxing today is part of MSI’s Camo Squad of products, covering their GE62VR 7RF and 7RE gaming notebooks, Trident 3 desktop PC, Z270 motherboard and a GTX 1060 GPU. The main differentiator here is that members of the Camo Squad get that nice digital desert camouflage (which looks a lot like the desert version of the US Marine Corps’ MARPAT camo) and a free copy of Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

The notebook comes in a large-ish box with digital camouflage printed on the front. That box contains the actual box that the notebook comes in plus a freebie.

Speaking of freebies, while MSI throws in a bunch of stuff when you buy a Camo Squad product, the GE62VR has the most number of free swag in the bunch. Aside from the notebook, you’re also getting a limited edition Camo Squad water bottle, t-shirt, three metal dogtags and a free copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands with every purchase. We would have appreciated a mouse swathed in digital camo as well to complete the set.

Initial Impressions: a gaming notebook that’s powerful enough for most games

After reviewing literal heavyweight gaming notebooks in the past, we’re pretty stoked that we actually have a notebook in our review labs that we can take along with us for mobile gaming. With a 15.6-inch display, the GE62VR 7RF easily fits in the bag that MSI throws in for free and most notebook bags out in the market today.

As far as styling goes, the digital camo pattern on the notebook really sets it apart from other products in the market today, and makes it stand out from the plain Jane GE62VR that MSI offers.

Which is well and good, since the GE62VR’s overall design sans camouflage doesn’t really stand out. It’s designed as a no-nonsense gaming notebook and doesn’t have the aggressive fan design that the notebooks of its rivals.

The lid of the notebook doesn’t have LED lights or strips, which is quite a change from the notebooks we’ve been seeing lately. Opening the lid will reveal the 15.6-inch full HD display, along with the colorful SteelSeries keyboard, which provides all the LED lighting that you’ll ever need.

Despite the SteelSeries branding the keyboard isn’t mechanical, though it does feature a number pad that’s possible thanks to the notebook’s size. There’s a touchpad right below it but it’s a bit difficult to find (and see) because it blends so well with the rest of the chassis. Who knew camouflage would be so effective, right?

There’s a variety of plugs and ports along the sides of the notebook, which includes an Ethernet port, 3 USB ports, USB Type-C port, full size HDMI port and a SD card reader. Surprisingly enough, the GE62VR also has an optical disk drive, in the year 2017. Throwback, perhaps?

The MSI GE62VR 7RF is equipped with a 7th generation Intel Core i7 processor, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of VRAM, 16GB of DDR4 2400 RAM, 256GB of SSD storage (M.2 SSD) and 1TB of HDD storage. Those specs are more than enough to run modern games, or at the very least the copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands that’s included with the purchase. We’ll have to see how it fares in the other games that we have in our library.

MSI is selling the Camo Squad version of its GE62VR 7RF at Php 109,995, which comes with all the freebies you see here plus a copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands and a Season Pass.
