MyPhone Infinity Lite Review: The Best Infinity Ever

We review MyPhone’s Infinity Lite!

We’ve spent quite a lot of time with MyPhone’s Infinity Lite, the company’s most affordable octa-core smartphone ever. It just made sense that the company would release a smaller, more affordable version of their flagship Infinity since they made the same thing with the Iceberg lineup, specifically the Iceberg Mini. Much like the Iceberg Mini, the Infinity Lite isn’t your typical downgraded flagship – it’s probably MyPhone’s best Infinity ever, combining great specs, performance and more importantly, price, in one cool package.

Still looks like a child of Sony’s Xperia Z2 and Apple’s iPhone 5

Since the phone is part of the Infinity lineup, it only makes sense that the device carries most of the design language of its bigger brother. If theXperia Z2 and the iPhone 5 made sweet, sweet love, the Infinity Lite would probably be the result. Looking at the device head-on, the Infinity Lite looks uncannily like Apple’s current flagship, with its big, black bezels and monolithic design. The back of the Infinity Lite uses scratch-resistant glass, which is reminiscent of Sony’s Xperia design language, A dark grey band of plastic surrounds the sides of the Infinity Lite.

The physical controls are all located on the right side of the device, along with a nano-SIM/microSD slot that you pop out using a pin, similar to how you do it on an iPhone. The micro SIM slot is located on the left side, with the 3.5mm jack and USB port located on the top and bottom of the device, respectively.

Unlike the Infinity, the Infinity Lite’s storage can be expanded via a microSD card, though there’s a catch. The microSD port shares the same slot as the nano-SIM slot, and you can’t use both, together at the same time. So essentially, you will have to choose what’s more important to you – a second SIM or more storage space.

The Infinity Lite has a slightly smaller display and resolution compared to the full-sized Infinity, coming in at just 4.7-inches and HD. While some people may not like the downgrade, we actually welcome it for a couple of reasons. Full HD is kind of wasted on such a small display, and most people won’t even see the difference anyway. We’ve also seen MediaTek’s octa-core processor lag (however minute) on full HD displays, though it seems to fare better on HD displays.

The display itself is actually pretty good, capable of producing really nice colors, with great contrast and sharpness. Viewing angles are pretty good as well. Probably the only thing that we don’t like with the display (and the glass back) is that they’re both smudge magnets – if you have OCD tendencies, you might want to invest in a micro-fiber cloth for the Infinity Lite if you’re planning to buy it.

Lite in name, not in performance

While the Infinity Lite uses the same MediaTek processor that majority of octa-core smartphones use, its clockspeed has been reduced from 1.7GHz to 1.4GHz. On paper, it’s a far slower processor compared to the other octa-core smartphones that’s being sold by different companies, and obviously you’re going to get far lower benchmark scores in AnTuTu (around 4K points lower).

In practice though, it never really felt that way. We’ve noticed in past reviews that phones with MediaTek’s octa-core processor exhibit lag (however tiny) when paired up with full HD displays. This issue isn’t apparent on HD equipped smartphones however, and that’s true with the Infinity Lite. That, combined with Android KitKat and minimal bloatware means that the Infinity Lite runs virtually lag-free when you navigate through the phone. The user experience is pretty fluid and smooth. Gaming with the Infinity Lite is pretty much the same as well. Even in high, Dead Trigger 2 ran well, with little to no lag.

The Infinity Lite also comes preloaded with a nifty gesture recognition feature. You can actually go directly to some of the apps that you want by just drawing the letter on the display of the Lite when its screen is on standby mode. Tracing M opens the music player, C opens the dial pad and S opens messages. You can also unlock the display of the Infinity Lite when it’s off by tapping on it twice, ala LG’s G3.

Camera: MyPhone hits another one out of the park

The MyPhone Infinity had an excellent camera that finally made up for some of the sub-par offerings that they’ve included with their previous flagships. The Infinity Lite continues that trend, offering excellent camera performance in challenging conditions, including low light. We’ve attached sample photos below (the Chuntug street sign was taken under green neon light, around 10 PM in the evening):

 Surprisingly long battery life

When the MyPhone Infinity Lite was announced, everyone had negative reactions to the 2000mAh non-removable battery. It kind of made sense –other smartphones with the same processor couldn’t pass the 8 hour mark consistently, so it made sense that the Infinity Lite would be the same.

That’s actually not the case – the lower clock speed of the processor in the Infinity Lite meant that it consumed far less power compared to other MediaTek octa-core powered smartphones running at 1.7GHz. Combine that with the less power-hungry display, and you get a far more power efficient smartphone. The Infinity Lite posted around 10 ½ and 11 hours of continuous battery life before it died on us with moderate use (gaming, texting, internet, a bit of calls). Lighter use would probably yield even better results.

Verdict: the best Infinity so far

Don’t let its name fool you – the MyPhone Infinity Lite is more than capable of standing up against the other octa-core offerings of competing brands. Aside from being one of the more striking smartphones currently offered by a local brand, the Infinity Lite is capable of delivering great performance from its octa-core processor, great pictures from its camera and excellent battery life considering its size. If you’re looking for an affordable octa-core smartphone from a local brand, the Infinity Lite is it.
