Students never had it this good

When we were going through high school, we had to do learning the old fashioned way – writing on notebooks, yellow paper pads and the chalkboard (with the added bonus of having an allergic reaction from chalkdust). Today, students of the Philippine Science High School Main Campus in Quezon City will be able to experience the classroom of the future, thanks to the generosity of Samsung Philippines. The new Samsung SMART classroom uses Samsung’s technology to allow teachers and students to collaborate like never before, in a dynamic and modern setting. The new classroom also gives both students and teachers quick, efficient access to numerous educational tools for a bigger and greater learning experience.

How does it work? Well, each student in the Samsung SMART classroom is given a specially modified Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. Their devices are have a special app installed in them that allows them to see and experience what their teacher is writing on the special TV/digital whiteboard.

Aside from pushing course material directly to the student’s Galaxy Tabs, teachers will also be able to conduct quizzes right in the devices, and will be able to get quick metrics about the test he/she just gave to the class, how many got a certain question wrong, how many got it right and so on.

What’s nice about the setup is that teachers always have master control over all the tablets in the classroom, which means students won’t be distracted by Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and all the other apps that the teacher deems unnecessary for learning.

Teachers and students of the PSHS demoed how the entire thing worked via a short, computer programming lesson with a quiz at the end. Everything worked seamlessly – while the teacher was explaining things on the interactive whiteboard/display, his display was mirrored in the Tabs in front of the students.

The delay between the display of the teacher and the tabs of the students were minimal, although to be fair there were only less than 30 Tabs running at the time. To be honest, the demo made us a bit envious of the students of the PSHS.
