Razer’s new smart band tracks fitness, pairs with your phone

Razer has really thrown us for a spin in this year’s CES. Aside from outing their Adaro Series with nary a reference to gaming, the company has just announced their newest product: the Nabu. The Nabu is a fitness tracker that also doubles as a smartwatch, allowing to subtly check your phone’s status and messages without having to physically check it yourself.

The Nabu has all the tracking features you’d expect from similar smart bands that keep track of your personal health – location, altitude, steps walked, sleep data, calories burnt, distance traveled and so on. It also notifies you of calls and messages going to your phone via two small OLED displays placed at opposite sides of the Nabu. The idea is that the second screen will serve as a privacy filter of sorts, preventing people from reading your messages when they’re standing beside you.

The Nabu can also send your personal information (if you want) to other Nabus out in the wild. Shaking the hand of another Nabu wearing professional for example, will prompt the Nabu to exchange LinkedIn information.

Razer also hopes that developers create their own apps using the Nabu. Speaking to Engadget, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan said that “real-world gamification is something we’re really focused on.” Augmented reality apps and games can be built using the Nabu’s open development platform, which kind of explains Razer’s thinking behind the device.

The Nabu will be sold to developers at the end of Q1 for around $50 or Php 2238, and while there’s no word on final price yet, word is that it should fall under $100 or Php 4476.
