LTFRB Still Lives in the Stone Age, Goes After Uber and Tripid

“We will contact them to stop them and they will be called to a public hearing and be issued a show-cause order.” -LTFRB Winston Ginez

As a technology and gadget enthusiast I’m all for innovative start ups trying to find solutions for everyday problems of the everyday Filipino. That’s why I’m absolutely perplexed and frustrated with the reaction of the LTFRB to the growing popularity of two apps: ride-sharing (locally developed) Tripid and private driver flagging service Uber.

LTFRB Chairman Winston Ginez, in an interview with InterAksyon.com, said that both companies violate Commonwealth Act No. 146 or the “Public Service Law” and that they should secure franchises first from the LTFRB (aka they want to milk both companies for money). Ginez goes on to say that both companies were reckless and that they should have consulted the LTFRB first before going into business.

Instead of trying to squeeze more money out of these start-ups and discouraging international companies to invest in the Philippines, the LTFRB should be more supportive and encouraging. Granted that these companies didn’t consult them prior to launching their services, the LTFRB didn’t have to go “YOU CRIMINALS STOP UNLESS YOU GET FRANCHISE FROM US” with the media. Granted that it is within the charter of the LTFRB to safeguard public safety with public services, they should have a more supportive and encouraging tone to innovative services like Tripid and Uber.

Public safety. Transportation.

Wait… something comes to mind.

How long did it take the LTFRB to install speed limiters in buses (they’re thinking of doing it now thanks to the initiative of James Deakin)? How many had to die before they actually acted on that issue? Is it really public safety and service or is it just a question of franchise fees?
