Viral Fridays: Meet Saya, Japan’s Hyper-Realistic Computer Generated Schoolgirl

Welcome to Unbox’s “Viral Fridays” where we feature weirder than usual tech and geek related news to cap out the week.

Oh, Japan. Your wonders never cease to amaze us. Advanced AI, humanlike robots, holographic idol singers, and now hyper-realistic digital… schoolgirls. What will they think of next?

Say hello to “Saya”, a near-lifelike, computer-generated construct of a Japanese schoolgirl. Husband and wife team Teruyuki and Yuka Ishikawa, both Tokyo-based 3D modelers, have been working on Saya for more than a year now. Last year, the couple released photo stills of Saya for public viewing. Now, we’re treated to a quick video showing the schoolgirl in motion for the first time. Wowza!

The Ishikawas have earlier mentioned that their eventual goal for Saya is for her to star in a feature-length movie. For now, they will have to be content in commercial endorsements, like in the video above.

The video was taken in CEATEC, a Japanese electronics expo, where Sharp was showing off its newly-unveiled 8K monitor. Saya was chosen as the brand’s endorser, showcasing the new 8K panel’s high-spec clarity and fluidity.

The (near) future is filled with 8K display panels and hyper-realistic CG schoolgirls. What a time to be alive.
