After being nabbed by the Land Transportation and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in a sting operation, Uber is now finally in the clear as far as its operations in the PH goes. The LTFRB sat down with Uber, along with the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) after the negative backlash of netizens in the immediate aftermath of the Uber sting operation last October 23.

During the meeting, which was attended by officials from the government agencies and Uber reps from both the Philippines and Singapore, the parties managed to hammer out an agreement that puts Uber’s partner vehicles in the LTFRB’s vehicles-for-hire category, which means they’ll now be under the jurisdiction of the LTFRB.

This means that Uber will have to give the names and vehicles of Uber partner drives to the LTFRB for background checks and to ensure they’re road-worthy.

“Both sides came to the table to find concrete ways to make government regulations more in tune with today’s technologies. We all agreed on two things: first, Uber’s services are for the people’s benefit and, second, regulation is a must for public safety and order,” said Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya.
