Android Q Preview Reveals System-Wide Dark Mode, Updated Permissions

Dark mode all the way

While most phones are waiting for their Android Pie upgrade, XDA Developers got their hands on a developer preview of Android Q. Equipped with the February 2019 security patch, this version of Android Q showcased some new features like a system-wide dark mode. For Android Q’s implementation, you have the choice of scheduling when Dark Mode activates—similar to how MacOS’ Night Shift works.

Apps that don’t support dark mode can be forced to use the feature via an “override force-dark” feature at the Developer options.

Another significant change with Android Q is that it gives users more freedom in handling app permissions. While Android Pie gave emphasis to privacy, Android Q takes it to another level by restricting certain permissions only while the app is in use. This means you can control apps to not gain access to things like location when you are not using the app.

Other notable features include a “force desktop mode” in Developer options, which presumably will enable a native Samsung DeX-like experience, aesthetic changes to the Always On Display, and a “Time to take action and Time to read” setting under the Accessibility menu.

Android Q is expected to launch sometime September this year, so expect Google to refine these features or add more along the way.
