Braven Goes Big Time with the Braven 850

When Braven first entered the market they introduced small, portable, and weather resistant wireless speakers at a competitive price. We were amazed at the sound quality and the power it had given its small footprint. However there are times when we need something bigger. Something that can turn a living room into a fun and booming party! That’s where the new Braven 850 comes in — the big daddy of all Braven speakers! The Braven 850 packs much more power and better sound quality but it still maintains the same design philosophy (aircraft grade aluminum) in a bigger shell.

We snagged one from Beyond the Box and we’d like to share with you guys our unboxing and initial impressions!

Packaging: You Can Tell It’s Big

The Braven 850 does away with the hard plastic box that we saw with the earlier models. Instead we have a big carton box which immediately tells you that the speakers are quite big. Not really something you can stuff in your backpack and carry with you day-in and day-out.

We peeled off the tape at the sides and then popped open the lid at the top. Inside we found a huge styrofoam sandwich (lol). The filling? The Braven 850! Check out the pics below.

Other than the speakers we found the usual set of plugs, cables, manuals, and certifications.

Okay now that we have that out of the way let’s jump right into the speakers!

Initial Review: Power Overwhelming

Just like its smaller brothers, the Braven 850 looks stunning. It’s has the same high quality aircraft grade aluminum housing but it’s roughly 4x bigger than the previous models. The size isn’t just for show though. The Braven 850 has 20 watts of stereo output! Based on our initial tests that’s more than enough to fill a huge living room with good quality sound.

When it comes to the sound quality or power, we don’t have any complaints. You definitely get what you’re paying for with the Braven 850. By the way, if you want to enhance and power up the sound you can actually daisy chain it with another Braven 850! Coolness right?!

Other than the sound, the Braven 850 also functions as a mobile power bank for your smartphone or tablet (just plug via USB). It also has a microphone function so you can just take calls on it if you have it paired with your smartphone. That makes it a pretty versatile set of speakers.
