GPU Turbo vs Hyper Boost: What are the Differences?

GPU Turbo vs Hyper Boost: What are the Differences?

Let’s compare the two current performance-enhancing tech out there

As consumers demand better performance for phones, brands are now looking for ways to deliver exactly that beyond just providing better hardware. Software tweaks to increase performance is apparently the answer, with two companies offering their own take on the idea: Huawei with their proprietary GPU Turbo tech and OPPO with Hyper Boost.

While both have the same aim at improving performance, both approach the problem differently.

Compatibility

GPU Turbo is designed to work exclusively with Kirin-powered phones, specifically those powered by the Kirin 710, Kirin 970, and the upcoming Kirin 980. Hyper Boost, on the other hand, claims to support both MediaTek and Qualcomm processors.

There are advantages to this: in Huawei’s case, making GPU Turbo exclusive to Kirin processors gives them the added flexibility for future enhancements since they are focused on their in-house processors. OPPO’s solution gives its better compatibility to their phones regardless of the processor they are using—at least on paper.

The scope of enhancement(s)

In both cases, GPU Turbo and Hyper Boost get things done by making micro adjustments to the system level. However, while GPU Turbo solely focuses on improving gaming performance, Hyper Boost claims to improve app and system performance as well. OPPO claims that their tech will enhance the performance of specific apps and system-related tasks, resulting in faster boot-up times.

That does not mean that Huawei doesn’t have a feature focused on enhancing system performance. Their other tech, called CPU Turbo, improves system performance by overclocking the CPU. However, this is only available with the Honor Note 10, as the tech needs additional, necessary hardware in order to run smoothly.

Supported games

Since the primary goal of both tech is to improve gameplay, both GPU Turbo and Hyper Boost aim to enhance the gaming experience for select titles. Both of them have support for PUBG Mobile, while GPU Turbo supports Asphalt 9 Legends and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. For Hyper Boost, their tech also supports Arena of Valor, along with 9 other titles.

Both GPU Turbo and Hyper Boost are expected to support more games in the future.

Availability

Huawei has rolled out GPU Turbo to several phones that include the P20 Pro, Mate 10 Pro, Nova 3, Nova 3i, Honor Play, Honor 10, Honor Note 10, and Honor 8X. On the other hand, OPPO has yet given details on which of their phones will receive Hyper Boost.

We have tested GPU Turbo on a number of Huawei and Honor phones, and it does deliver on its promise. We are waiting for an OPPO phone to have support for Hyper Boost to see if it performs as advertised, so stay tuned.
