Yup, it’s real
Meitu, a Chinese company that’s pretty much unknown to the west, has launched a new selfie-focused phone that has two strategic partnerships attached to it. The new Meitu M8 is marketed as a selfie-focused smartphone bearing the company’s now trademark hexagonal design, 12-megapixel Sony IMX362 front facing camera, Helio X20 processor, 5.2-inch full HD display, 4GB of RAM and a a 3000mAh battery.

- 5.2-inch full HD IPS display, 1920 x 1080 resolution
- 64GB of storage

While the phone itself is pretty standard (aside from the design) the two strategic partnerships are not. Meitu has managed to score the rights to use the likeness of Hello Kitty on its phones from Sanrio, which makes it easier to market the M8 to the ladies. They’ve also managed to score those same rights to use Sailor Moon on the phone, and you better believe their milking the hell out of that partnership for better sales.
To that end Meitu is selling the M8 Sailor Moon pretty Soldier Edition with a pretty badass-looking selfie stick, which is styled much like Sailor Moon’s third attack wand, the Spiral Heart Moon Rod. The company also tapped Chinese superstar Angelababy to help sell the phone (and the selfie sticks). They’ll need all the help they can get, considering Meitu is selling the Sailor Moon Pretty Soldier edition at RMB 2999, which is around 21.6K.
