Mid-Range Comparo: Honor 8X vs Huawei Y9 2019

Which is the right big-screened phone for you?

We knew it was bound to happen, but it’s still pretty surreal to see: Huawei is competing with itself in the lower mid-range segment of the market. Confused? Don’t be: the company’s sub-brand Honor has a pretty great offering in the Php 12,990 price point that Huawei has put a direct competitor to.

We’re talking about the Honor 8X and the Huawei Y9 2019. Both are priced at Php 12,999 and have near-identical internals which makes it hard to choose between the two.

Internals are a tie

Both phones have decent mid-range internals with the Kirin 710 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM.  While you get 64GB of internal storage with the Y9 2019, you get double the storage at 128GB on the Honor 8X. If the internal storage is not enough, both phones come with a MicroSD card slot for expansion. Both phones come with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, along with EMUI 8.2.

The Honor 8X has a glass back which the Y9 2019 doesn’t have

On the Honor 8X, you get an aluminum and glass build, with 2.5D glass covering the back. The Y9 2019, on the other hand, has an aluminum frame and a curvier design— though you are only getting polycarbonate back. Both phones feel solid on hand, though the Y9 2019 is easier to grip thanks to its curvier body.

Both have similar displays

Both phones come with a 6.5-inch Full HD+ display that offers good viewing angles and color reproduction. While both have roughly the same notch size, the Y9 2019 crams in more components within the notch with its dual front camera setup.

The Honor 8X’s camera wins, at least on paper

While the Y9 2019 boasts of a quad-camera setup, you get a higher-megapixel primary rear camera with the Honor 8X. Since both phones are powered by a Kirin 710 processor, you are getting almost the same set of camera features such as AI scene recognition and bokeh effects.

The Huawei Y9 2019 has a bigger battery

The Y9 2019 has a slight edge over the Honor 8X since it has a bigger battery at 4000mAh. The Honor 8X makes up for its smaller battery with support for fast charging.

So, which phone should you get?

Since they have the same price and near-identical specs, it all boils down to one’s preference: get the Y9 2019 if you want a bigger battery and quad cameras, and get the Honor 8X if you want a better rear camera, more internal storage, support for fast charging, and a more premium build.
