Samsung’s basic feature phone saves a cop’s life
People always jokingly say that Nokia’s 5110 is one of the hardest, most indestructible things in the universe, possibly hard enough to stop a bullet. Well, they might want to reconsider that title, especially since Samsung’s E1200 featurephone actually did stop a bullet – and saved a cop’s life in the process.
PO1 Demar Muaña, a cop in Camotes Island, north Cebu was shot the other day trying to arrest suspected drug dealers in barangay Sta. Cruz in San Francisco. Unfortunately, the bad guys got the jump on the arresting party and Muaña was shot in the chest. Incredibly, his Samsung E1200 (a basic feature phone released three years ago) stopped the bullet, shattering his phone to bits but saving his life.
And while he was shot a few more times in left arm and the armpit (you can’t exactly walk around in a suit of armor made out of E1200s), he managed to survive the ordeal. His other gunshot wounds were easily survivable – a shot in the chest usually isn’t.
“I thought I was going to die,” he said in a bedside interview at Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City.
“The cellphone saved my life. I’m lucky,” he added.
Even though Muaña was wounded, the brave police officer still managed to return fire on his assailants.
After risking both life and limb for the service of his community, I think PO1 Demar Muaña deserves a new phone, don’t ya think? Samsung if you’re reading this: replacing his old phone with something new would really be a nice thing to do.
