OnePlus’ newest beast, the OnePlus 3, is the first consumer smartphone that’s widely available to Western audiences that have 6GB of RAM. Sure, there are phones like the Vivo Xplay 5 Elite and the upcoming Zenfone 3 Deluxe that have 6GB of RAM as well, but the former is only available in China and the latter is still yet to be released.

So it’s not surprising that many people are looking forward to playing with the OnePlus 3 to see what that 6GB of RAM brings. Unfortunately, though, you won’t be reaping the benefits of that massive RAM anytime soon. Reports from people who already have the phone say that the device can’t handle more than 3 or 4 applications at any given time. Apparently OnePlus has decided to limit the RAM potential of the smartphone to conserve battery. It seems that using all of the available RAM may be detrimental to the user experience.

There is hope though – the CEO of OnePlus, Carl Pei, says that they’re releasing the device tree and kernel so that developers can make custom ROMs for the phone that takes advantage for all of the RAM that’s available for the device. Unfortunately, if you’re someone that is looking for a phone that uses all of its 6GB of RAM by default, then this device may not be it.
