Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4.0 Will Arrive Later This Year

Will charge a phone’s battery to 50 percent in less than 15 minutes

While the Samsung Galaxy S8 was the first phone to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset, US customers unfortunately did not have access to the new chipset’s latest and most important feature: Quick Charge 4.0. Qualcomm-powered Galaxy S8 and S8+’s had to contend with the slower Quick Charge 2.0 standard, which isn’t as fast as the latest iteration of the product.

Well, future flagship smartphone buyers shouldn’t fret, as Qualcomm is on track to introduce Quick Charge 4.0 to Snapdragon-powered devices in the middle of 2017.

Quick Charge 4.0 is the company’s latest iteration of their technology, and is capable of charging a smartphone up to 50% in just five minutes. It’s 20 percent faster than the already blistering Quick Charge 3.0 that’s on many smartphones today.

Take note that Qualcomm’s charging estimates are based on a reference device that has a 2,750mAh battery. Much like many uber-fast charging tech, Quick Charge 4.0 uses the new USB Type-C connector to deliver the juice needed to quickly charge a phone.
