Report: Facebook is Developing a Smart Speaker with a Touch Screen Display

The Amazon Echo Show

The rumor comes from an insider in the “upstream supply chain.”

Regional tech news outlet DigiTimes reports that Facebook is building a smart speaker device with a touch screen panel. According to the media outlet, Facebook has tapped Chinese iPhone manufacturer Pegatron for the task and currently aiming for launch in the first quarter of 2018. The smart speaker is currently being developed by Facebook’s secretive R&D division Building 8, utilizing an LG in-cell touch display with a magnesium-aluminum frame.

The Google Home

DigiTimes’ source did not mention any feature or hardware specifics on Facebook’s upcoming gadget, but it would be safe to assume that the social media mogul plans to stuff as many of its existing apps and technologies inside the device.

The smart speaker market is already populated with the likes of Amazon’s Echo Show and Google’s Home Assistant, and according to recent reports, Apple will also be launching its own product in the form of the Apple HomePod. Interestingly enough, Facebook has an advantage by introducing a featureful device with built-in integration to its massive social media messaging and video conferencing technologies.
