Meet the world’s first Tizen powered smartphone!

When Samsung replaced Android for its home grown Tizen OS in their new Gear series of smartwatches, we knew it was only a matter of time before the company fully integrated its own OS into a smartphone. It’s finally happened with the Samsung Z, the company’s first ever Tizen powered smartphone.

Samsung Z specs

  • 2.3GHz quad-core processor
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display, 720 x 1280 resolution
  • 16GB of storage, expandable via microSD
  • 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and flash
  • 2.1-megapixel front camera
  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPS, AGPS, GLONASS
  • 3G, LTE
  • 2600mAh battery
  • Tizen OS, v2.2.1

The Samsung Z looks to be a beast of a smartphone, running on an unnamed 2.3GHz quad-core processor (possibly the company’s own Exynos SoC) with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The company has also gone back to their Super AMOLED panel after releasing several flagships without it, Galaxy S5 notwithstanding. Samsung has spared no expense when it comes to the connectivity of the Z as it sports LTE for fast wireless data for countries that support it.

The question has to be asked though: why Tizen? Why would Samsung go with their own OS when they’ve relied on Android for so long? Some people speculate that the company wants more control of the software side of the equation, which lead some to believe that sooner or later the company may split with Google after Tizen gains maturity. Whatever the case, folks in Russia will be the first to get their hands on the smartphone, landing in their territory in Q3. After that? Who knows.
