Samsung Reportedly Working On In-House GPUs

Another step towards chipmaking domination

Samsung is not content with being the world’s biggest chipmaker: While it manufactures its own memory chips, camera sensors, and modems, Samsung is working on making their own GPUs as well.

Recently, Samsung’s California and Texas-based design teams are recruiting peopleĀ from Qualcomm, AMD, and NVIDIA to aid in designing their own GPUs.

The move is similar to Apple, where the Cupertino-based company designs its own CPUs and GPUs from the ground up for their iOS devices.

Having things done in-house should help Samsung in optimizing its processors by having a design that is clearly their own. This could later lead on to software innovations similar to Huawei’s Kirin-exclusive GPU Turbo or to better hardware optimization like Apple’s approach to its iOS devices.

Samsung’s first-gen GPUs will focus on its entry-level models and will introduce it to their flagship models for the second-gen GPUs.
