While there’s a lot of of innovative Chinese tech companies that out unique and interesting smartphones, there’s still no shortage of shady, fly-by-night Chinese outfits that exist only to straight-up clone the best selling flagship phone to be sold as counterfeits.

Benchmark company AnTuTu has released interesting results for 2017, which showed that of all the Android phones released last year, around 2.64% of them were clones or counterfeits of more popular models. The most counterfeited phone of those is the European version of the Galaxy S7 Edge, followed closely by the Chinese version of the phone.

The statistic is not surprising, since Samsung’s flagship smartphones are still highly sought after devices and are the pinnacle of Android phones today.

So how will you be able to determine if the phone you’re buying is legit or not? Well, one thing to look at is the asking price – if someone is selling a Galaxy flagship to you at a ridiculously low price, that’s an immediate red flag. According to AnTuTu’s data, the resolution of the device matters as well, since many of the knock-offs have only full HD and HD displays.
