OPPO A71: Is it Really a Good Budget Friendly Gaming Smartphone?

Is this budget phone fast enough?

In our full review, we noted that the OPPO A71 is a great entry-level phone, especially for its specs and features which include a MediaTek 6750 processor and 3GB of RAM, along with a 5.2-inch HD IPS display.

We wanted to put the “Speedy Operation” phone claim to the test and to do this we subjected the OPPO A71 to a gaming stress test. We used GameBench (tethered via a computer) to measure the stats and Asphalt 8: Airborne as our game.

You’ll probably ask why we chose not to use games like Injustice 2, Lineage 2 Revolution, or even NBA 2K17? Since we are testing various phones from different price ranges, the games mentioned above may not run properly on some phones due to storage or processor/RAM limitations. As we are building our own database using GameBench, we believe that Asphalt 8 is the best baseline game in measuring a phone’s overall performance.

How did the A71 fare in our quick test? Here are the results:

On Low Setting: Consistently Stable FPS

Without a question, the A71 fared well with Asphalt 8 in the low setting, bagging a 100% FPS stability on a median FPS of 29. The stats translate well to CPU usage, as the A71 only used around 9% of CPU usage to run the game. Combine that to an average memory usage of 283MB, the A71 is a steady machine in running Asphalt 8 on basic settings.

On a more detailed analysis, having a stability index of 0.92 shows that save for that one outlier in the graph, everything’s smooth for the A71 in basic settings.

On High Setting: 99.41% Stability

For Asphalt 8‘s high setting, the A71 consumed slightly more CPU usage at around 10%.  The same goes for higher memory usage at 324MB. It’s not a big deal since the phone needed to use some more muscle to render the details nicely at the best setting. Maintaining the same median FPS of 29, along with a 99.41% FPS stability, the A71 is still a slick operator even at a more intense graphics setting.

While the stability index went a bit lower at 1.14, the fact that the A71 managed to maintain its median frame rate helped it cement its reputation as a speedy phone on a budget. With its performance on Asphalt 8’s high graphics, the A71 can be considered a dependable gaming phone.

Verdict: OPPO A71 is a Good Budget Friendly Gaming Phone

Going back to our evaluation of the A71, we do agree that as a budget phone, the A71 does live up to its “speedy operation” not just for daily tasks, but for gaming as well.

Concerns about its internals should not be a worry, as OPPO’s ColorOS skin keeps the phone running smooth at all times. For its price, it certainly gets the job done.
