Claims “Rules of Survival” and “Knives Out” copied several game elements of PUBG
Given the success of Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), which was launched a year ago, it is not surprising that several game developers will copy the successful battle royale game. However, the developers behind PUBG are not happy with the copycats, causing them to file a lawsuit last April 2 against NetEase, the developers of “Rules of Survival” and “Knives Out”.
Those who have played “Rules of Survival” know more or less that it has copied a lot of elements from PUBG. Among these elements include the use of the “chicken dinner” term, having a pre-game lobby and waiting area, and the way the play map is utilized, among other things.
Based on the details of the complaint, along with the attached screenshots, both Rules of Survival and Knives Out have infringed on several game elements unique to PUBG. In addition, both games released Android and iOS versions before PUBG released their own official mobile app, leading to confusion as to which should be properly referred to as “PUBG Mobile”.
Should PUBG win this case, the company appeals to NetEase “to remove each and every version of the games Rules of Survival, Knives Out, and similarly infringing games, from distribution and to cease developing and supporting those games.” While it seems that PUBG has a strong case, it all depends on the court’s decision regarding the matter.
NetEase has yet made a statement on the issue as of this writing.
