It’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man!

Our budding 1/6th scale limited edition figure collection grows once again with our newest acquisition: Spider-Man by Hot Toys from the movie Spider-Man 3! The web-slinging Marvel superhero was played very well by Tobey Maguire in the trilogy. Among the three movies we always felt that the second one featuring Doctor Octopus was the best while the third one (where this fig is based on) was the one that sucked the most, hehe.

Anyway, to jog your memory about the movie, here’s the trailer. As you’ll see below this is the movie that featured the following villains opposite of Spider-Man: “Venom”, New Goblin (Harry), and the Sandman.

We actually also picked up 1/6th scale figures for Black Spiderman (with Sandman base) and New Goblin so watch out for our features on those soon! Let’s move on to the review!

They Got the Costume Right

When you’re making a Spider-Man figure, there are two critical aspects that need to be kick-ass. First is the costume and this is where Hot Toys hit the ball out of the park once again! The iconic red and blue Spider-Man suit complete with a non-removable mask (sucks) is just spot on. They used the same silvery cob web pattern together with the black spider logo at the front (red at back) which was used in the movie.

Like what we just mentioned, the mask is not removable and the box didn’t come with an extra head sculpt of Tobey Maguire. Boo. What’s weird though is that the Black Spider-Man 1/6th scale figure has a Tobey Maguire head-sculpt. They should have really included one in this set as well.

To make up for the absence of an head sculpt, Hot Toys also put in more than your usual extra hand pegs. There are several web accessories including two for flying scenes, two for cobweb shooting, and finally two more for cobweb opening. Attaching them is easy — just remove the interchangeable hand peg, slide in the black placeholder, and put the hand peg back in. Make sure you also use the right peg and slide in the excess web to the figure’s sleeve to cover it and to make it look like it’s shooting out of his wrist.

The suit is made from some sort of soft neoprene material making it quite durable but most importantly flexible. And this leads us to the second most important aspect of this fig: posability.

Very Posable!

With over 30 points of articulation and a flexible suit, the Spider-Man figure is very posable! You can easily get any of his iconic poses down especially if you use the different interchangeable hand pegs and pair them with the web strings. Hot Toys also threw in a figurine stage imitating part of the clock tower in the movie. You can have Spidey sit on top of it, lean on it, or fall back to it when he’s under attack by villains.

Yes folks, that’s a 1/6th scale Doctor Octopus figure. We’ll write about that one soon so stay tuned, hehe.

The box also came with the usual black base stand with name plate and movie logo should you decide not to use the clock tower pillar as a prop in your display. Spider-Man goes much better with the pillar though or maybe the Hot Toys Dynamic Stand so you can really pose him while he’s in the air.

Two Thumbs Up!

If not for the lacking head sculpt of Tobey Maguire, this would have been one of our all time favorite 1/6th scale figures. However it still is a great addition to our collection and we’re definitely going to round-up the rest of the Spider-Man cast in the next few weeks.

Btw, the Black Spiderman figure has a Sandman base which you can also use with this figure. Here’s a shot of it.
