Vespa Goes Electric

There’s no doubt about it. In a city where motorcycles and scooters are a a dime a dozen, Piaggio’s classic Vespa can still turn heads. We’ve had the privilege of owning a number of scooters from the Italian brand and it never failed to get nods of approval whenever we’d take it out for a spin; despite being widely used as the delivery vehicle for a certain pizza company at that.  While we’re big fans of the classic Vespa scooter, it’s finally nice to see that the Piaggio Group is keeping an eye on the past but taking a step towards the future with this announcement at EICMA aka the Milan Motorcycle Show:

The Piaggio Group invests in electric motors to redesign the mobility of the future.

The Italian Vehicle Manufacturer recently introduced its Vespa Elettrico Project, an electric scooter that the company promises will be “first and foremost, be a true Vespa”; meaning it will have the company’s design trademarks, will be easy to use, and is said to have “innovative connectivity solutions” as well. The Elettrica should be available by Q3 of 2017 and, while pricing has yet to be announced, we can probably expect it to be priced a little higher than its siblings still running on fossil fuel.
